Doctor V64 BIOS Description

Bios V1.83 for Doctor V64 :

just fix the bug in V1.82 to re-enable track no. up or down selected by '|<<' and '>>|' in VCD playing.

Features of Doctor V64 Bios V1.82 :

1. Plays all MPEG I files ('.mpg' and '.dat') in CD even its size over 128M bytes.

2. Full functions in MPEG I files ('.mpg' and '.dat') playing works like playing a VCD (fast forward, fast backward, pause, adjust the audio channels and volumn, slow motion and video capture).

Features of Doctor Bios V1.81 :

Plays all MPEG I files ('.mpg' and '.dat') in CD once the 'Play' button is pressed. Playback of all files will be in looping mode until the 'Stop' button is depressed (max. of 85 MPEG files inside CD).

Play '.mpg' or '.dat' MPEG I files downloaded from PC and show it continuously until the 'Stop' button is pressed.

Select a '.mpg' or '.dat' file from the CD file selection screen and it will play continuously until the 'Stop' button is pressed.

To access the CD files selection screen while the V64 is in *input mode, hold down the 'Stop' button and pressed the 'Play' button. Otherwise it'll play the MPEG I files in CD.  Following access to CD files selection screen will be just be by pressing the "Play' button until the CD tray is opened or a new CD is loaded.

All the useful functions allow the V64 to become a portable presentation device!  Demonstration of
games, product information, advertisement, etc

can be stored in MPEG files and be playback on the V64 in retail stores. Basically, it can also be used for meetings or any other presentation occasions.


*Input mode refers to the screen when the V64 is first turn on or when the 'Stop' button is pressed
after the playing a VCD movie or a series of '.mpg' or '.dat' files.

Features of Doctor Bios V1.80 :

1.Real video and audio MPEG demo files can be used for game selection : It can search and playing '.mpg' MPEG files of demos in a CD automatically and upon 'Play' or '>>' or '<<' button pressed to load the corresponding game file or to play next mpeg demo file or previous mpeg demo file.
After the game file loaded, the Bios will wait for you to switch on N64 to run game and when you switch off N64 later it will return to MPEG demo playing loop. So the V64 + N64 can be used for games demonstrating and even used in acrade game centre with legal license CD game files and MPEG Demo files.

If you press 'Stop' button during the Bios waiting for you to switch on N64, it will return to 'Stop' waiting for input mode.

If no game file corresponding to a MPEG demo file, the Bios will not play the demo to you, so you can enjoy the games selected basing on some wonderful MPEG demoes.
If you want to run other operation (e.g. load 'sav' or '.ips' files) with a CD consisted with some '.mpg' file, just press 'Stop' button before press 'Play' button to run CD file selection at normal situation. If you press 'Menu' button during reading headers of files to skip the procedure, then when you only press 'Play' button to run CD next time, it will go to the MPEG demonstration again; if you wait until whole procedure of header reading completed, then the Bios will stay in the non-demo mode and anytime you only press 'Play' button to run CD file selection at normal situation until the CD changed or the V64 switch off and on again.

2.If your Bios combined with a upload sram utility (for example, the 'Up SRAM V1.2') then you'll get the great convenience on uploading a SAVE data file into DX256 or the game cartridge because the Bios V1.80 will load the utility automatically after a '.sav' file loaded from CD or downloaded from PC and then waits for N64 to be switched on to run the utility. After N64 on, the Bios will waits N64 off again and then return to file selection operation screen so you can load game file after the save data uploaded easily.

If your Bios don't combined with a upload sram utility, Bios V1.80 is no diffence in '.sav' file loading procedure compared with earlier version.

The Doctor V64 Bios V1.80 will be released on May 5, 1998 officially.

Features of Doctor Bios V1.73 :

1. Auto detect door opened or closed of CD drive and take right operations so you can place a CD in the tray of the CD drive and just press 'Play' button to start.

2. Enable error try in data loading so you can read CD-R of more brands in your V64's CD drive.

3. Easy upgrade: prevents the problem of just showing 'loading...' and dead in Bios upgrading.

Features of Doctor V64 Bios V1.72 :

1. Speed up the time of 'waiting...' when you first power on V64 and press 'Play' to load game CD.

2. Speed up the time of 'waiting...' so much to let you reach the file selection screen quickly.

Remark: If you open the CD tray, change a CD in it, then you need to close the CD tray manually for this new Bios version.

1. Add a Menu operation for swaps bytes in DRAM to run other's non-swapped file format games loaded from CD or downloaded from PC.

2. Speed up the operation of 'upload DRAM data to PC' to half the time but still reliable compares with early versions.

Features of Bios V1.70 :

Can be worked with new released 'tpc2' & 'v64io2' lets communication between V64 and PC without problems. V1.70 can match old version 'tpc' and 'v64io'; 'tpc2' and 'v64io2' also can work with old version Bios before 1.70. (Some printer ports in PC aren't fully match the print port's standard, some bidirectional signal pins just can work in one direction so that this kind of print port can't work with Bios before V1.70. Now the new Bios and 'tpc2' and 'v64io2' not only can use the old bidirectional pins but also can use another direction confirmed pins for communication without problems.)

All sub-directorys in CD will be displayed with a spe> 

A little improve in CD Drive controlling let more brands of CD-ROM Drive can be used in V64.

(If you want to modify the background color or H/V offset of the screen of V64, don't just modify the bytes in first 128k byte but the second 128k byte too. For example, if you want to change the data in 00002H then you also need to change the data in 20002H to the same value.)

Features of Doctor V64 Bios 1.61 :

You can press 'Menu' button during headers reading of game file in CD to stop the headers reading and go into file selection immediately.

The headers reading procedure just run once until CD changed. That means don't need to read headers each time you want to load file from CD after headers reading completed in once.

You can choose your favourite background color of V64's screen by changing the 3rd & 4th byte of the Bios to new values :6b, 80 for green; 80, 80 for black; 6b, ff for blue;

You can choose the start point of V64' screen in H/V offset by changing the 5th(V) & 6th(H) byte of the Bios to new values.

Well improved in ATAPI command control let more CD drives of different models and different brands can be used in Doctor V64 (Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Mitsumi, Hitachi, Liteon, ...).

Features of Bios V1.60:

  1. Add two new Menu functions which Can read the 128k byte data from DX256 and upload to PC or download 128k byte data from PC to DX256.
  2. Enhance the power of file/dir processing:
    • The game name & version & file size now can be showed in bottom of screen upon the cursor pointed a game program image in file selection operation.

    • Even empty dir can exist in CD (it'll cause error in Bios V1.53).

    • You can read the content of '.txt' files on V64's display (max. 2Kbyte) to help game's playing (informations about game program, '.IPS' and '.SAV' file).

Features of Bios V1.53:

1. Support Sub-Directory on CD file's structure. Use 'Play' to entry a Sub-Directory and use 'Stop' to quit to Father-Directory.

2. Max. Directories + files = 4096.

3. a)'.ips' files, b)'.sav' files, c)'.R64' 6502 run files, d)V64_verx.xxx can be both loaded either from CD or from PC.

4. When loading '.ips' files, the counter, address, size, repeated data will be showed on screen. Press 'CH' for entry the pause mode (with flash 'Pause' displayed), then any key pressed once for patch one IPS data pack, 'CH' pressed again for continue.

5. After loaded a '.sav' file, please load the LaC's 'Up-sram 1.2' and run it by N64 to upload the data in '.sav' file to the saved memory of the game cartridge inserted on top of V64's emulation adapter or the DX256's current memory segment (reference to the informations about DX256).

6. Add a menu item of 'Up load Bios to PC'.

V1.52 Bios has the following features :

The latest version of Bios is V1.52 which fix the bug of file display over 64 and support Menu Drived Operation for many additional functions !
V1.52 also support CRC code fix function and allow min. 2M bit file to be loaded.
Modify game program by input some codes and load '.IPS' & '.SAV' file read from CD or downloaded from PC would be supported in later version !

Bios V1.50 has to be cancelled and replaced by V1.52 NOW !

Menu Drived Operations :
1. Press 'menu' button in Stop mode to call menu operation.
2. Use '<<' or '>>' button for change the item cursor up or down.
3. Use '|<<' or '>>|' for select pervious or next menu page.
4. Use 'play' for select the item which pointed by the item cursor.
5. Use 'stop' for exit from menu operation.

V1.40 Bios has the following features :

Press 'Menu' key in VCD playing for screen capturing. The screen data will be stored in V64's DRAM, max. 100 slides in 128M bits memory space.

Press '<<' or '>>|' or '|<<' in stop mode for enter the slide show represented manual, 5 seconds and 10 seconds auto mode corresponsively. In this mode, '>>' key for +1 slide No., '<<' for -1, '>>|' for +10 and '|<<' for -10.

User can upload the 64M (max. 50 slides) or 128M (max. 100 slides) slide data to pc by press and hold the '>>' key then use TPC in PC to receive the file ( example: tpc 1 /v64slide.1 ).

V1.40 has to be cancelled caused by screen capturing and slide show errors.

V1.41 fix the errors in v1.40 and add the fade in and fade out features.

Notice: Upgrading the V64's BIOS

Unzip the *.zip first and then connect the DoctorV64 to a PC parallel port (with a full-pin printer cable), and then utilize the TPC program with the following syntax:

eg: tpc 1 v64_ver1.61  > (for printer port 1 used only)     
     tpc 2 v64_ver1.61      (for printer port 2 used only)

After version 1.33 features:
  1. Add 'loop play' functions for VCD & CD playing by press the 'Stop' button vefore and with the 'Play' button pressed.
  2. Fix some bugs in remote read/write DRAM data of V64 and add the functions of remote read/write MPEG DRAM data (address range from 40000000 to 4007ffff).
  3. The control program will fill all '0' to the balance space unitl 1M + 4K byte for some game program which size less than 1M+4K byte(8M+32K Bit) to let a game program can be run at min. 2M bit (256K byte) size.

  5. 'read 80000238 48' for read the V64 cpu's SRAM 48H bytes start from address 0238H to the buffer in PC.
  6. 'write 80000500 200' for write the first 512 bytes of buffer to V64 cpu's SRAM start from address 0500H.
  7. 'read 0 8000' for read 8000H (32K) bytes from V64 DRAM start from address 000000H to the buffer in PC.
  8. 'write 01FFFFFF 1' for write the first byte in buffer to the V64 DRAM address 1FFFFFFH (the last byte in 256M bit space).
  9. 'dump 128 10' for dump the data in buffer 10 bytes start from buffer address 0128H.
  10. 'edit 721' for edit the data start from address 721H of buffer in PC.
  11. 'read 4003ea00 1000' for read the V64 MPEG DRAM data 4k bytes start from address 03ea00H to the buffer.
  12. 'write 40010000 8000' for write 32k bytes of buffer to the V64 MPEG DRAM start from address 010000H.
  13. 'save 8000 test1' for save the 32k bytes in buffer to a file named 'test1'.
  14. 'load test1' for load the 'test1' file into the buffer (max. 32k bytes).
