All Artwork in this issue (c) [DoOm] 1997 _____________ What is this? ============= -This mag is made 100% by me, [DoOm]. (More info at bottom). -This is basicly a sort-of mag that will be released when N64 Games are out. I will be reviewing N64 Games that are out and also N64 Demo's when/if ever they come out :) -I have taken the same layout as The Game Review (TGR) from Ionizer but the graphics and content are completely different. -Old Games are at the top, new games are at the bottom. Dates Jan 25 - April 9. ____________ News Updates ============ -Swat (console devision) has merged into Anthrox, all new Anthrox releases are now atx- (not as-xxxxx.zip). -The SuperCom Partner 64 (SCP64) is out! It COMES with a CD drive. The CD drive is read only, just like the Doctor, but is only 5x speed. This helps keep the cost down. As standard, it comes with 128Mbit RAM, and the AC adapter that splits into two parts. These two leads are to provide power to the CD drive, and the copier. The SCP64 comes in a blue box, with holographic stickers on the cartridge slot, which is looking quite slick and comfortable compared to the CD drive counterpart. There’s three buttons on the CD drive: one for playing the game, and the other two to switch between games (up and down). It looks like it cannot actualy back up games, just play them. (Most information on SCP64 taken from ROWAN) ============================================ HOW TO GET THIS MAGAZINE ON A REGULAR BASIS: ============================================ TNR is released when new games appear. It can be obtained from me in #Doctor64 on effnet. - * - * - * - * - * * - * - * - * - * - GAME REVIEWS, RATINGS, UN-BIASED OPINIONS, HELP/TIPS FOR INSTALLING GAMES! This is the best game out for the N64, and it is brilliant in every way. You control Mario in a 3d environment, mario is in 3d and all enemies, loads of different camera angles, and the analog stick is used to control little mario. Despite all the rumours, you cannot control Yoshi, and Luigi is not in Mario64, ok? WAVE RACE 64 *USA FINAL* <==[ N64/V64/64MB ]========================> This game is extremely fun and enjoyable. You control a Jetski and have to race around a set course against other computer controlled oppenents or a friend. When you complete a CC, more tracks become available for your disposal. The tricks are easy to figure out, but they do look good! The Trick mode is cool, the only downside to this game is the 2 player mode. Hell at the start it is fun 1 on 1 racing but with no computer controlled characters it does get boring, and my friend and I mostly just drive around doing tricks. The controls are kinda wierd, you use the analog stick to swing the ball, going from bottom to top, gives a sort-of real feel to it, i suppose. The graphics are standard, no slowdown or pop-up noticed. An all round ok game, get it if you like golf. The quality of the stills were dissapointing to me. They use 3-d for the ship's movement in the story line----No big deal. I really think that a lot of the stills could have been done on the Super N. (I know what I am saying) Enough of the bells and wistles, lets get to the guts: The GAMES GRAPHICS. O.K. here is where you see the N64 start to show itself to its player. The first level is very nice.(Snow Speeder Shoot-em up) The graphics along with the music(later) literally PULL you into the game. Explosions are big, the enemies are big and everything rotates and moves around with ease and without Popinandouts. You have a few camera angle options, but behind the snow speeder is the best(especially if you let them kick your but so the smoke of the damage messes up your vision!)KAMIKAZE MAN!!BONZAI!!!!!The first person levels are deep and use good fogging effects to show this depth. There isn't too much put into the levels though(enemy wise), but this could be a good thing because it is a challenge. All of the levels have great depth and detail. It took me a few hours of really playing alone without distractions to truly appreciate the game and the amount of detail that is within. ***This game is for the lone-warrior, play alone and become the hero, trust me.*** Because this is a 3-d adventure, the feeling of depth and detail are very important, you have to feel like you can go where you wish. This game offers you this faithfully. This depth and detail are presented in the graphics and effects of the game.*****YOU HAVE TO TRY THE SEEKERS MAN, THIS EFFECT IS F&^$%NG COOL, FIRE FROM A VERY LONG DISTANCE AND WATCH THAT BABY SEEK AND DESTROY IN A GREENISH COOL TYPE COLOR.) THE SOUND effects are great! All of the sounds from the blasters to that snow droid that does that wierd but cool talking sound ARE there and sound great. The sound is VERY CLEAR and perfect port from the movies: VERY impressive. The sound effects play a major role in pulling into the game. Overall, the control is adequate, but could have been better. Controlling Dash in the first person levels is a challenge. He seems to cover more ground than a human should when walking. He runs smoothly, but when it comes to tite spots, you really have to watch your S-----T------E--------P (notice the inconsistencies in the spaces between letters, well this is what it is like to control dash.) You can and if you want to, will get used to it and over it with time. The snow speeder feels good, but I wish that it could turn a little tighter and faster, then again its not a Water-ski. You don't have a VERY dificult time playing the game. It will not be because of the control that you do not progress, it will be your skill. PILOT WINGS 64 *USA FINAL* <==[ N64/V64/64MB ]========================> The graphics were realistic and breathtaking, but they do seem a little rough after you have been playing Mario 64...I really think the sound could have been much better. Donkey Kong Country's sound is of a higher quality than this, but it doesnt really detract from the experience. This game shines in the one area that truly matters, it easy to get into and very addictive. Often times you may find yourself drifting from the task at hand to just explore. That isnt to say that the tasks are boring though. They are quite fun. This game would be nothing without the analog control pad. How did we ever live without it? I find myself playing the same levels over and over again. It just never gets boring, well for the first couple of days :) Game Uses - Analog for main game control, cannot config controls. -> RATINGS 6/10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -> FILENAME : AS-PSTRK.ZIP -> DATE RELEASED : Jan 26, 1997 .------------------------------------------. |_ <<* >ANTHROX< and >SWAT< *>> _| \______________________________________/ | | | PERFECT STRIKER - JAPANESE | `----------------------[VD64/64M/N64]--' The graphics are superb! 9 out of 10!!! Smooth animation, NO PIXELLITATION, no choppy polygons, and RARELY,RARELY any slowdown! The texture mapping is great! You can see the numbers clearly, the faces are perfect, you can even see the muscles of the thighs on the players. HIGH LEVEL OF DETAIL HERE!!! The goalies have different colored shirts that are solid or mutli-colored, white gloves (which you can see!), the black shoes on each player with their white laces, the many different style of hair cuts; the 100+ plus moves, each with DIFFERENT animation! From the diving to head a ball, to jumping to head a ball, to a side air kick, to the slide tackling, running, jogging, diving of the goalie, the quick pass, the chest trap and many more are all ACCURATE!!! The amount of detail on this CART alone surpasses many, if not ALL, of what CD's have shown! The control... perfect! 9 out of 10! You walk, walk fast, jog, run, and sprint (holding a C-button to sprint) all with the precise control of analog. You can stop your player, do a 360 spin, and move on; lean into the defender as you try to sprint by him; juke to one side, carrying the ball with you as a defender slides past; dribble the ball between both feet very rapidly and skitter past oppenents. Is this hard? NO! You can do this with just a touch of the button or a rotation of the analog stick. You can choose from 3 different types of button settings (not sure if you can make your own yet...) all of which suit you the way you play. The only hard part is figuring out which button does which, since the instruction booklet is written in Japanese writing. The gameplay is phenomenal! 9 out of 10. Though at first, you will just use "Pass" and "Shoot" buttons ("A" and "B"), but once you learn what the rest of the C-buttons do, you'll be able to lob, lead, lift the ball, side kick, summersault kick, head the ball, dive for the ball, slide tackle, push, step in, bump, and much, much more! Just a touch of a button or a combination of two, just plain and simple! And unlike many sport games, where once you find a certain "play" you can slaughter any oppenent at any given time, I have yet to find that. On the hardest difficulty setting, the highest scoring game has been 3-1! You must actually play like a pro. Pass back, centering the ball, fouling now and then, using banana kicks (YES, BANANA KICKS!!!) on the corner kick, diving for the ball, shoving an oppenent, letting the pass go through and on to another player! Changing your formation from 5-4-1 to 3-3-4 or 1-4-5 or however you wish; making substitutions for tired players; the players have ENERGY bars which mimick real life stamina: you can't play the same players EVERY game cuz they get tired! It's unbelievable the depth that this game has! AND IT'S ON A CART!!! The sound is great! 8 out of 10! From the ball hitting the post, bouncing off players, to the blowing of the whistle, and the commentary of the announcer. The commentary is there for EVERY PLAY! Even a pass, a steal, a shot, a foul, it's there every second. Though, I have no idea what the announcer is saying, it does get over said a little, but it's better than the four sayings that the announcer has on Gretsky Hockey!!! The crowd chants more and more as you get closer to the goal and when you or the computer takes a shot-the announcer will shout, if blocked, there is that moment of silence to watch the rebound; if made, the announcer yells "GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!" and your players run to the sidelines and dance or do a myraid of things. The fun factor in this game is off the charts! 10 out of 10! It ranks up there with the origonal SMK! And the great thing about it, is that at anytime DURING a game, you can pause it and change the number of players playing, whether it's 4 against the computer, or 2 on 2, or 3 on 1, or whatever your fancy is, it's a great addition to the multiplayer deminsion! So, if a friend came over and you were playing against the computer, you can INSTANTLY change it to you and your friend vs the computer. It's a very helpful addition! The lastability of this game is endless. You can create your own players, play a single game, a full season, a tournament, practice penalty kicks, or train your team to make them better. And to top it all off, it's 4 player compatable :) Another great way to improve the length of the game. That was almost 2 years ago, when the game was still pulling in the punters as a coin-up. The genre has moved since then, though, and it now looks extremely dated. NBA HANGTIME *USA FINAL* <==[ N64/V64/128MB ]=======================> Well, for starters, I have to say that Hangtime keeps all that is in the arcade and more. I'm pretty sure that the N64 version has more characters than the original Hangtime. I'm not sure about the Maximum Hangtime version. The games graphics are just as good and the movement is awesome. The game definetely keeps the feeling of the arcade unlike the sloppy MKT!!!! I got that sloppy remark from you guys, I thought it was funny, yet correct! The only real flaw, of course, is the announcer's voice which at sometimes, seems very, very compressed and screechy. I could tolerate it because the game is very fun, but I would like to see these N64 games improve in sound quality. Donkey Kong country sounding good, I don't know why they can't iron out this compression problem soon. I did notice a little slow down going for alley oops sometimes, but for once, it adds to the game. It makes it look like your dunk is in slow motion for a small moment. That's just my opinon as I'm sure some people hate the slowdown. The tracks now have hills, unlike the original snes version. All the original crew are here, including Wario. Though it is a quality title, Mario Kart 64 falls short of fulfilling the expectations raised by the seminal 16bit original. Some tracks are a little weak and the annoying cheap CPU-opponent AI conspire to make the game something of a missed opportunity. EVERYTHING!!! The frames of animation for many characters were cut in half, the colors are watered down, the sound absolutely sucks, the Agressor mode is almost pointless with the long time it takes to take effect and the short amount of time to use it. There are no decent options, such as at LEAST being able to lower the amount of the incredible damage that the cheesy combos provide! Even fighting as Khameleon is a chore. To find out which out of the measly 3 characters you are for those 4 seconds, you have to look at the BARELY noticeable color of the name Khameleon on your life bar! How can anyone play like that!?! The graphics are top, but the fog is annoying as you cannot see more than about 15 steps, is this part of the game to allow that gloomy amazon rain forest look, or is this a clever way to stop those buildings appearing out of thin air, who knows! There are 8 levels, you say that aint a lot, well wait to you play them! The first level alone took me an hour and a half to complete(or find all the keys if you will). The only problem I have is it's sometimes easy to get lost. A good example of this is in level two. You come to a spot with an under water tunnel. The map feature does NOT work here, adding to the confusion, and you will easily run out of air if you can't find your way around quickly enough. The next confusing part was in level one. You're running around some Stone Hengeish type pillars and again, the map does not work. This detracts from the lastability/ playability in my opinion. Some of the jumping spots are confusing and annoying. You will somtimes find yourself dying because you missed the jump. This is where looking to the ground may come in handy. If you like exploring, you'll definitely like this game. The hour and a half time is probably still missing some of the things left in level one. Turok has some wonderful graphical pizzaz, lots of enemy variation and is quite fun. One of the best parts of the game is the opening with the Iguana. I still laugh at this. The controls are dodgy and the graphics are not that good. The same flaws that were in previous Fifa's are also in this version. If you have a PAL n64, and you cant get Perfect Striker to work, then grab this! but like me and you have a jap/usa machine, go and get Perfect Striker a much better game and extremely playable, unlike this game. Anthrox/Swat (now just Anthrox) were the first group to release Fifa64, how ever there version does not work. The group "Doom64 1997" Version was released after and worked 100%. This was the only true working version out and the first working version out! The next day Anthrox released a 2byte fix, so if you did grab the non-working release by anthrox just get a hex editor and Change: OFFSET 05FD6F to F1 OFFSET 41FEE0 to DC Game Uses - Analog or d-pad for main game control, can config controls. -> RATING: 4/10 - Get Perfect Striker much better! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -> FILENAME : AS-BCORP.ZIP -> RELEASE DATE : March 26, 1997 .------------------------------------------. |_ <<* >ANTHROX< and >SWAT< *>> _| \______________________________________/ | | | BLAST CORPS - USA Version | | | `----------------------[VD64/64M/N64]--' -> FILENAME : MSFTUG24.ZIP -> RELEASE DATE : March 21, 1997 More Shit From The [-[-WHILE SEARCHING FOR COMPETITION WE-]-] [-[ UNFORTUNATELY RELEASE: ]-] -------------------------------- BlastDozers from RARE/NINTENDO ! [V64/JAP]--------------------------[64Mbit] Both these versions are identical except one is in English and the other is in Japanese. Blast Corps is a winner in my book, with excellent graphics, and gameplay and sound!. BlastCorps sees players clearing a path through levels to allow an out-of-control missle carrier to progress unimpeded, using up to 18 different vechiles, from bulldozers to an `Akira`-style motorcyle to the A-teams VAN! It is also one of the first jolting Pack-compatable games :) Game Uses - Analog for main game control, can config controls. -> RATINGS 9/10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -> FILENAME : MSFTUG26.zip -> RELEASE DATE : March 27, 1997 More Shit From The [-[-WHILE SEARCHING FOR COMPETITION WE-]-] [-[ UNFORTUNATELY RELEASE: ]-] -------------------------------- Human Grand Prix [V64/JAP]-------------------------[64Mbit] This was an eagerly waited release from HUMAN SOFT. Many people thought from graphic previews that this was the best racing game! And it almost is! The graphics are a bit clitchy, and there is pop up, but noway as much as Cruisin USA. The controls take sometime to get used to, as they are very sensitive, but once mastered it is a breeze. There is 6 view points in the game, front, just see front wheels, see front cone, see behind car, little further out, even further out. If you like racing games then check this game out, could of been much better, no 2-player option, but still worth a look. Game Uses - Analog for main game control, cannot config controls. -> RATING 6/10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -> FILENAME : MSFTUG27.zip -> DATE RELEASED : March 27th, 1997 More Shit From The [-[-WHILE SEARCHING FOR COMPETITION WE-]-] [-[ UNFORTUNATELY RELEASE: ]-] -------------------------------- J-League Live 64 from EA [V64/JAP]------------------------[128Mbit] This game was slightly different than Fifa64, the reason is that this JAP version was licensed to the J-League. Therefore it had more stadiums and teams. But the engine itself was still of Fifa64. If you like soccer games then get Perfect Striker, as this doesnt compare to it at all, the controls are not very responsive, if you want the best get Perfect Striker, if you want the worst then get this. However it didn't happen that way, so it was disapointing to see Midway scrap the 4 player mode. But if you look at the game this is without a doubt the best version of DOOM ever. The castles, walls, and even the mosters are of top graphics. The controls are easy and responsive. The only problem probably with DOOM would be it is outdated and played way too much. But you must give credit to Midway for making one nice game! A nice touch I have noticed is when you use the Chain-Saw, if you attack people blood comes on the blades the more you kill, the more blood, nice touch! :) *For some reason Anthrox released DOOM64 as a 128MB game, however it was really a 64MB game. Thanks goto N64SPLIT v0.01 for the fix. Game Uses - Analog or d-pad for main game control, can config controls.
