GB TRANSFERER 2

It had to happen, a few weeks ago another Gameboy Advance copier hit the streets in Asia, and this one is manufactured by the EMS company, best known among N64, PSX and DC gamers for their Action Replay spin-offs, buggy memory cards, but they also managed to release a GB copier a few years ago, called GB Transferer.

And now GB Transferer 2 is here, a copier which allows the use of both GB and GBA carts with the Transferer 2, unlike the Gameboy Adcvance, Flash Advance Linker, copier released by Visoly back in June. But GB carts still cannot host GBA games and vice versa, so don't count on buying a cheap GB flash cart for use with your GBA roms.

The Transferer 2 design looks a lot like the Flash Advance Linker, though the Transferer 2 is a bit smaller than the Flash Advance Linker, but then doesn't allow the use of batteries, but has to be connected to an external power source when being used. I have been using the same GameGear 10V (1.2A) powersupply for the Transferer 2 as well as the Flash Advance Linker.

A switch on the left side of the Transferer 2 makes you choose between GB, GBA and ofcourse OFF (nifty!), but choosing GBA mode when wanting to flash a GBA game doesn't seem to matter, my flash of the Blues Brothers demo worked quite fine when the Transferer 2 was set to GB mode.

The unit doesn't come with any manual of any sort, not even a small description of the program which is included on a 3.5" Maxell disk with no label. Just like the Flash Advance Linker, the Transferer 2 allows the use of multiple games on a cartridge, and using a very cool, compared to the FAL one, menu image using the font and coin/star from Mario 64, see picture on the left. However just like the Flash Advance Linker it only allows a maximum of 2 games/demos on a 64mbit cartridge.

But flashing a Transferer 2 GBA Smart Card is extremely slow, while flashing 64mbit using the Flash Advance Linker and a 128mbit cartridge takes just under 2 minutes on my PC, flashing 64mbit using the Transferer 2 and it's 64mbit Smart Card (128mbit doesn't exist, yet) takes over 4 minutes!

Just like the Flash Advance Linker, the Transferer 2 GBA Smard Card doesn't feature EEPROM for saving games such as Lady Sia or Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, but it includes a switch on the cartridge to choose between SRAM and Flash saving, where the Flash Advance Linker carts automaticly saves as Flash in games such as Mario Kart Super Circuit.

The Transferer 2 GBA program called XLinker is somewhat easy to use, although missing a bit of explanation for people who have never used a game copier before. At first the program didn't feature an "erase only" option, but a week after the release and new program with this feature was released.

I'm not really sure what to think of the Transferer 2, it's the typical EMS, poor, quality and I honestly didn't expect to be blown away, in a matter of speech, when I opened the package from LikSang this morning. But releasing a copier this slow when something much faster is already is out on the market is beyond me.

The price of a Flash Advance Linker incl. 64mbit card compared to the price of a Transferer 2 incl the 64mbit Smart Card is just about the same, the Transferer 2 being just a few dollars cheaper (prices taken from LikSang's site). So my advice would be to stick with the Flash Advance Linker, atleast until someone comes up with something of even better quality, and maybe even EEPROM support(!).

I would like to thank Alex and the rest of the LikSang crew for once again for letting me review one of their products, please visit their site for more videogame goodies :)
