Yes, you're not dreaming, Console World is back! For those who don't know, Console World were the premiere charts for the console scene during the 16bit era. Time for scene history 101, Fallen Angel started these charts as a response to the biased scene charts released by Toyax/RMK back in 1993 (Damn its been 8 years already?!) and it was continued on by Dragon Avenger & Night Assassin until December 1995. It was quite a success, and with the help of Elitendo, 2 issues in SMC format were made. We've always felt that Console World helped contribute to the 16bit scene by keeping a small history of things that went on. And now that the GBA has been released, the things which made the 16bit scene so great are beginning to appear. Now before you cry plagiarism, we've gotten full blessing from the original authors of Console World. The point system is based on Rotox & WayneKerr's GBC Scene Charts with a few modifications here and there. And YES, they've given us full permission to use their format. Another interesting feature of the Console World charts was the guest commentary from people who contributed to the scene (Fservs and emu lamers and webwarez NOT included). We will definitely include this in our issues. Enough jibber jabber, let the charts BEGIN! - ennay RULES & POINTS -------------- -1 Point - DUPE: Released a game, but only after another group already beat you? -1 point then. DUPE TRAINER: A Late Trainer with the same or less options. BROKEN: If you release a game/trainer/crack that doesn't work, -1 time! +0 Points - BETA: Beta releases are cool to check out, but they are not the real deal. No points are given or taken for these. TERRITORY DUPE: If a game is released in Europe first and contains English, then a following USA release is considered a territory dupe. If a game is released in the USA first, and it releases later in Europe with no additional languages, it is also considered a territory dupe. Games that have additional game features/levels/etc. added are void from territory dupe rules. Only Roms that contain differences when file compared fit into the territory dupe category, if a Rom is the exact same in 2 territories, it fits into the -1 dupe category. Territory dupes receive 0 points. FIX: A non-protection related fix for a released game gets 0 points. +1 Point - TRAINER: Any selectable trainer including a menu receives 1 point. MULTI: A European Multi Language release of a previously available US title. FOREIGN: A German/French/Spanish/Etc. release of a previously available English title. TOOL: A tool for the PC that is useful for Gameboy Advance purposes gets 1 point. EEPROM FIX: A fix for games containing EEPROM saves, to allow the game to run without EEPROM saving on the current GBA copiers. These get 1 point for now, they will get 0 once flash-carts featuring EEPROM saving become more mainstream. +2 Points - AVERAGE JAPANESE: An average Japanese game. Most RPGS, Mahjong titles, Slot games, Sims, Adventures, etc. will be put into this category. These receive 2 points. FOREIGN WORLD FIRST: If a German/French/Spanish/Etc. game is out before the English version, it gets 2 points. CRACK: A crack for a protected/non-working game gets you 2 points. +3 Points - ENGLISH WORLD FIRST: The first release of a game in English. This is generally the first release of the game available, either in Europe or the USA. These receive 3 points. QUALITY JAPANESE: A quality Japanese title that is either highly awaited or playable will receive 3 points. Generally games from major companies due out for release later in English will fit into this category. Most action games, fighting games, etc. will also fall under this category. TRANSLATION: Translating a non-English game to English = 3 points. They went silent after April, but I'm sure that these guys will be back before we know it. ennay: The overall friendly group in the scene kicked some major ass with a lot of the major Japanese titles. Following in the footsteps of Anthrox, they also bring you a much needed trainer for Castlevania. If you follow the GBC scene at all, you can pretty much expect Capital to bring you quality trainers and much fixes in the future. Eurasia was one of the first groups to receive their backup units, which explains them being able to release many of the American games that were out on storeshelves prior to the American launch of the GBA. In May, Eurasia brought us 2 very nice Japanese titles in Final Fight One and Bomberman Story. In June, Eurasia released every single Japanese title that was released on the Gameboy Advance. They have had a very strong performance on Japanese titles on all consoles this year - Not just GBA. It does not seem like it will stop either. ennay: Great work to the folks in Eurasia. These guys manage to score plenty of the playable Japanese stuff as well as some major US titles. This group has proven themselves in the Dreamcast scene and I'm sure they'll do fine in the GBA one. I was pretty surprised that they did not get involved on the GBA earlier. They were one of the dominant groups on the Gameboy Color. However, they have been pretty inactive on the GBC throughout 2001. One thing that I found surprising was that Menace and Eurasia kept claiming that their releases were pre-releases in their NFO files. In reality, all of the games that these 2 groups called pre-releases were available in shops besides Super Mario Advance from EUR. Not a huge deal anyway. It seems that Rayman Advance did come from a pre-release source, as it was a beta version. Hopefully Menace can pickup things and show us the same performance that they displayed back on the Gameboy Color. ennay: One of my all time favourite GBC groups, Menace comes to the GBA scene with two pretty decent releases. The only one that stands out in this bunch is J-League Pocket. That's the only Soccer game on the GBA currently. The Filesize Fixer is a remedy for end-users so they do not have to waste time downloading dupe releases that are re-sized. ennay: Rapid Fire brings you most of the unplayable Japanese stuff for the GBA. The Very Leet Filesize Fixer is a simple tool that eliminates the need for resize lame repacks that other groups seem to take credit for. They had a kickass day on June 7th, but went silent after that. I'm sure these guys will be around more often in the future. This is a legit release because the original Corporation Rom was too big to work on any copier, thus it was considered broken. ennay: Total Crap brings the fixed dump of Tony Hawk Pro Skater, probably one of the best launch titles on the GBA. The Gameboy Advance scene had been really slow throughout the months of March, April, and May. The reason being that almost noone had a copier, and the console had only launched in Japan. June brought a real explosion for the GBA scene. We got the launch of the American and European system, and the 1st copier - All in the span of 30 days. At the beginning of the scene, we saw 2 Roms dumped independently, and said wow. These were dumped nearly right after the release of the Gameboy Advance in Japan. Over the next couple weeks, things were very slow. That's where Capital & Anthrox came in. Capital dumped the whole Japanese line-up of games that was not dumped independently within the span of a few days. Anthrox released the 1st trainer, and Capital followed with the 2nd one. Rapid Fire managed to "steal" Roms from Capital. It was a very exciting bunch of days. Following them, came yet another drought. Towards the end of May, things picked up again when Eurasia started dumping games. They gave us many nice releases like Final Fight One, Super Mario Advance, and Bomberman Story. At the beginning of June, Eurasia started dumping the games that were trickling onto USA storeshelves prior to the launch of the system. A few days later, most of the scene had their Flash Advance copiers in their hands. The scene was completely changed. It was now about speed of the supply rather than who can dump the games. Mode 7 and The Corporation entered the scene at this point. The Corporation released 3 games on one day. The following day, Mode 7 released 5 games. For the rest of the month, the scene was very competitive. Mode 7 managed to dominate the English releases, and Eurasia won every single Japanese game. While the major players were at work releasing original games and contributing to the scene, there was also 2 groups that did nothing but release dupes, un-selectable trainers, and patches that patched the exact same bytes for dozens of games. Most people know who these groups are, and they will not be mentioned in Console World unless they can provide the scene with useful and original releases. Overall, it has been a great start for the Gameboy Advance, and the system already has several impressive titles. Many people refer to the console as a portable SNES, and make comparisions between the GBA scene and the SNES scene. Although the scene has not been that amazing yet, I would expect it to pick up as soon as the amount of games being released picks up.
