VISITING ECTS 2001 PART 1

Nintendo and Sony were missing aswell, Nintendo had decided to host their own show elsewhere, but managed to screw up on the tickets, or maybe someone somewhere just misunderstood something. Thing was that most magazines wrote that you could use your ECTS pass to gain access to the Nintendo show on sunday, but a phonecall to ECTS and Nintendo a few days before the show, just to confirm, proved that the pass could not be used for the Nintendo.

So I (we) ofcourse, obviously, didn't go to the Nintendo show and were stuck at the most boring ECTS to this day in the most boring hall I've ever seen. Looking at videogames the companies with the most impressive stands were Kemco, UbiSoft, TDK, BigBen (Dreamcast) and Rage.

Kemco was showing off a couple of GameCube titles, Universal Studios (Kemco) which is a mix of games based on differen't movies, such as Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, E.T. and Jaws, oh an Woody Woodpecker is your game tour guide :)

A pre-show mail said that Kemco would be showing off Batman: Dark Tomorrow at the show, which they did but only a movie of the game, well the intro for the game.

PHALANX

Besides the GameCube game(s), Kemco were showing off some quite impressive Gameboy Advance titles, the one that caught my attension the most was Phalanx - a shooter first seen on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System years ago. The game played very well and is very R-Type'ish, only a lot more action-filled, a game to look forward to if you like fast shooting action. The European (UK) release date is sometime in November this year.

EGGO MANIA

This game is a bit weird and I only tried it for a few seconds, but it still managed to bore me and give me an impression of an impossible game. Eggo Mania developed by Hotgen Studios and is inspired by Tetris and probably Dizzy aswell. You're this Egg guy standing at the bottom of the screen and has to catch tetris blocks falling from above and place them on the screen to get rows. To make everything harder, bombs also fall from the sky. Well an impossible game which I sure wouldn't waste my money on.

MECH PLATOON

This is the first real-time strategy game for the Gameboy Advance, and is developed by WILL with Takeo Mogi as the supervisor. I played the game for awhile but never really got the idea of the game, I was never really into StarCraft and that stuff. The graphics were a bit blurry and you couldn't really tell what was what, and the menu system confused me a bit. Then again, once you learn to use the menus and so on, this one may be quite nice.

CRAZY CHASE

The last of the Kemco GBA games shown at ECTS was Crazy Chase which is developed by Tong King Show. Unfortunately I didn't get to play this one, but it looks like a nice platformer with a camera angle which reminds me of old games such as Monster Max on the Gameboy.

BOULDER DASH EX

Not to be found at Kemco's stand, atleast I didn't see it, but they did give out a flyer and more information could be found in their pres kit. The game should be out sometime during Spring 2002.

Kemco also introduced a new carrying case for GBC and GBA games made of Aluminum which can hold up to 6 GBA carts. The most interesting gadget was probably the "Digital TV Tuner", yeah you heard right, Kemco is introducing a TV-Tuner for the Gameboy Advance later this year. This will, to no ones surprise I hope, enable you to watch TV on your dark (oops!) GBA screen, it has a built-in RCA jack for camcorders and other electronic devices. The only downside is that the unit is just as large as the GBA itself and it's on the back of the system, sorry but I don't have a picture at this time. Oddly this flyer was only included in some of the Kemco press-kits.
