Just like probably almost anyone i'm pissed with the dark, extreme reflective display of the gba. now i finally managed to open this sucker.( use a standart 1.5 mm screwdriver). Just as I suspected, this is mainly caused by the plastic cover NOT by the lcd ! So i just removed it... amazing results ! You can play under almost any light condition and the image is colorful and much sharper (just like one would expect from a highcolor LCD) . The only problem is that your LCD is not protected in any way. That's why i now keep it in that gay purple gba case... Maybe one can put some non-reflective foil on it. Btw the lcd does'nt seem that sensitive to me. If you really want to enjoy your GBA and you're not too paranoid about your LCD just give it a try...

If you can't open your gba you can also get rid of the cover with some very strong glue tape,as stated on pocket.ign.com.Haven't tried it though.
